Classes can be any day of the week, although we would like for all students to audition for all disciplines, please do not audition for a group that you don’t think you can commit to as it makes scheduling very difficult.
COMPETITION GROUP INFORMATION
Competitive classes are for students wanting to take their dance experience a step further. It also requires the enrolment in core classes (ballet, jazz, modern and/or hip hop). Competitions provide students with an opportunity to perform in an organized competitive environment against students from other schools in the region. We participate in 2 to 3 competitions a year, entry fees are approx $30 per dance per entry. Please note that the competitive classes require a strong commitment. Competing in a dance group is a team effort; students will be relying on one another to make their best effort. Please ensure that you are willing and able to dedicate yourself to your groups and the competitions. This means prioritizing rehearsal and performance schedules over other commitments.
Students missing more than 2 choreography classes in a row and/or general poor attendance in core classes or display a lack of progress or poor attitude and disrespectfulness to their respective teacher and other students may have their placement within the group re assessed and may be expelled from the group. Regrettably if a student has an extended family vacation, or vacations too close to competition dates (Feb-April) she/he may be asked not to perform or leave the group. If a student is ill or has a medical condition preventing them to dance at a competitive level she/he may be asked not to participate.
ALL COMPETITIVE STUDENTS WILL REQUIRE EXTRA PRACTISES. It is difficult to forecast if and how many privates extra classes will be required as groups’ progress at different rates, 2-5 classes is realistic. This considered private tutoring. The instructor providing the service enters a private service with you and can set their rate with you that they feel comfortable with. Any monies go directly to the instructor. The $25 per ½ hour estimation is based on the premium so that you know the highest you would have to pay. However, it is up to the individual teacher to determine their rate (you can expect to pay $5-25 depending on how participants, length of lesson and relevant to instructor involved). The idea is that the cost can be shared across all group members.

PHOTO DAYS MAY 29 & 30
Photo days are Sunday May 29 & Monday May 30 at the Brackendale studio. We are pleased to be using Bestway Photos. The basic Memory Mate (6 X 9 group photo 1 5 X 7 individual photo mounted together) is $10 including HST. Individual order envelopes will be available approx 3 weeks prior to photo days. Cheques should be made out to Bestway Photo and should be handed in with filled out order envelopes on photo days at your “shoot” time directly to the Bestway representative. Due to the volume of photos taken on these days we are unable to accommodate “specials” (siblings having photos together, friends having photos together). You will be required to have all costume pieces with you, including correct tights, shoes and undergarments. Hair should be the standard “show” classical ballet bun (hair parted over the center of the right eye, bun to be in line with the ears) unless otherwise instructed. Light stage make up is required.

 Doors open at 7:00pm for evening performances, 1:30pm for matinees. General admission.
 Year end show tickets will be on sale exclusively to HSDA families on Monday May 16 at the Brackendale studio 3:30-8:00pm, at the dress rehearsal (in the foyer of Eagle Eye Theatre) for the solo duo trio show Wednesday May 18, and Cast A & B Dress Rehearsals Tuesday May 24 and Wednesday May 25.
 Tickets will be on sale for the public Friday May 27 from Billie’s Bouquet (Downtown). Adult tickets are $18.00, students (under 18yrs) tickets are $15.00, tickets are non refundable. All cheques should be made payable to “HSDA”.
 General admission. There is no reserved seating except for the first 2 rows preschool parents, disabled and elderly. If you require assistance, please contact one of the ticket collectors.
 Arrival time for all students (excluding Pre School, Pre Primary and Hip Hop Boys) is 1 hour prior to show time, unless otherwise stated by your teacher. If hair and make-up need to be done at the theatre then arrival time is 1.5 hours prior to show time. There are no exceptions.
 Please DO NOT arrive in costume to the theatre or wear them back home. Costumes should not be seen in public.
 Insure that you have all pieces of your costume, shoes, tights, etc. and safety pins in case of costume malfunctions. If you do not have all your costume pieces for the performances you may be asked not to perform.
 If possible arrive with hair and basic make up done. If you need help with your hair, bring all necessary supplies, eg. Bobby pins, elastics, hair nets, gel and a brush. For every dancer hair is to be in a right side part in a bun that is centered and in line with the top of the ears.
 DO NOT USE THE WASHROOM AS A CHANGE ROOM.
 PLEASE no males in the change room at any time.
 No parents unless official volunteers are allowed back stage or in the Green Room
 Students are not allowed to leave the Green Room once checked in. This includes during the intermission. If students are found going to 7-11 or Mc Donald’s, they may be asked not to perform. We recommend bringing something healthy to eat that will not stain costumes and water (no juice, sodas or sticky snacks). If students are going outside they must be fully covered up. No dance shoes or costume outside. Students abusing the privilege of going outside may be asked not to perform.
 There should be ABSOLUTELY NO talking or laughing on stage, if you do this you may be asked not to perform
 For older students, if a student is drunk, hung over or any other inexcusable behaviour he/she will not be permitted to participate in any of the shows.
 Stay quiet in the Green Room, your noise carries through into the stage.
 No gum or jewellery on stage – use your common sense. Leave all valuables and jewellery at home. If you chew gum on stage you will be asked not to perform.
 Please do not expect to pick up your child during the performance, unless pre school or pre primary (see below)
 Parent volunteers must stay until all children from your group have been collected.
 Volunteers are responsible to have children ready to perform when called and should lead them back stage quietly. Please check each student for jewellery that should be removed, all costume pieces are securely in place, lace and ribbons are neatly tied and hair is securely fastened in a bun.
 Volunteers should encourage students to keep the Green Room clean. At the end of the night, it is expected that students will clean their changing areas and are not permitted to leave until Miss Blanchard has checked the changing areas are clean.
 Unfortunately there is not enough room at the side of the stage to watch the performance; students must remain in the Green Room until they are called.
 Please do not touch the curtains when you are waiting to go on stage, coming off stage or running around the stage.
 Students should remain in costume for final bows (choose your favourite costume, but it is nice to see costumes from each dance at the end)
 The stage is available for rehearsal prior to the performance. Teachers may call specific groups for rehearsal at this time.

PRE SCHOOLERS & PRE PRIMARY ONLY
 Pre School students should be picked up during the intermission (approx 8:45pm). If parents are watching the show, the first 2 rows are reserved for Pre School and Pre Primary parents ONLY so that children can join parents sitting on the floor for the second half.
 Arrival time for Pre School and Pre Primary students is half an hour prior to show time with hair and make up done with the exception of lipstick.
 Do not wear leotards under costume dresses – they make washroom call very challenging for volunteer parents. Panties and a little tank top are preferable if necessary.
 Please advise parent volunteers if you wish to pick up your child early so they can have them changed.
 Volunteers are responsible to have children ready to perform when called and should lead them back stage quietly

FOR PARENTS ONLY
 The estimated run time for each performance is 2.5 hours
 All intermissions are 15 mins long
 We hope to have all dance photos ready for pick up at the last weekend of shows – this is to be confirmed.

COSTUME CARE
Posted On: May, 4th 2011

We are very excited that you will be participating in Howe Sound Dance Academy’s rendition of Wizard of OZ performance this year. The following are our tips regarding costume maintenance.
• To assure the best fit, we have already had students try on the costume, so there is no need to wear the costume again until dress rehearsal. Please do not wear the costume until then.

• Be sure to have clean hands when handling the costume

• You should never be in costume while consuming food or drink, have HSDA warm ups over top

• Accessories for your costume are for dress rehearsal, photo day and performance only. They should not be worn until that time, nor should any of the items be washed.

• Although your costume came in a plastic bag, it’s a good idea to place them in a high quality garment bag when travelling to and from events. This will help prevent accessories or costume parts from getting lost or soiled. If the costume has a hat or mask, please place it in a box so that it will not get crushed.

• When storing the costumes at your home, place them in a closet for protection from younger siblings, heaters or pets that might damage them

• To remove wrinkles, please do not use an iron – it could change to color or burn the costume. Steaming is safer. Hanging the costume in the bathroom during a hot shower (far away from the water) works well to eliminate wrinkles.

• Each item – costume, hats, masks, shoes, gloves, tights etc... should have your child’s name on it. Many costumes and accessories look alike. Be sure to identify everything so that there is no confusion about what belongs to your child.

• Create a check list of every item for every costume. Refer to the list before you leave home for the dress rehearsal, after the dress rehearsal and again for photo day and all performances.

• No child should wear their costume while travelling to dress rehearsal, photo day, or performances. Costumes should be protected from stains. There will be adequate time for your child to put on the costume and make sure that it is perfect.

• Apply make up and do hair before putting on the costume to help keep it clean.

• After the performances, if you want to clean the costume, check with your dry cleaner for the best process. Some cleaning methods can ruin certain fabrics and trim.

Your examiner’s name is Mrs. Ahmad. Your pianist’s name is Miss Iona. Please practice saying Good morning/afternoon Mrs. Ahmad, Good morning/afternoon Miss Iona.

Please note your exam time. Arrive at the Brackendale studio at least 1 hour prior to your exam time with clean detangled hair in order to warm-up properly and Miss Blanchard can do your hair.

Primary: HSDA supplies you with your lilac exam skirt and white socks. You are using your own clean pink full sole leather ballet slippers with elastic sewn correctly across the instep & clean lilac short sleeve styled leotard.

Grade 1 – 8: HSDA supplies you with your character skirt and chiffon skirt (Gr 7 only). You will need clean pink tights with no holes or runs (Gr 1 – 7), clean tank styled leotard of correct color, clean pink full sole leather ballet slippers with elastic or ribbons sewn correctly across the instep (Gr 1 – Gr 5), clean canvas pink split sole ballet slippers with elastics sewn correctly across the instep, clean character shoes (Gr 1 – 8).

Hair items you will need to bring in order for Miss Blanchard to do your hair:
Hair brush, Hair comb, hair elastics (thick non slip preferred), hair pins, bobby pins, hair nets (not invisible ones), hair gel & spray.

Regrettably, the reception area of the Brackendale studio is small and noise carries easily into the studio. For this reason we ask that parents refrain from bringing siblings of the exam candidate to the studio. For parents waiting, we ask that you are quiet in the waiting area as voices carry into the exam room.
