SHALIMAR BLANCHARD, LRAD, ARAD, RAD RTS, AISTD
Director of Howe Sound Dance Academy & of Squamish Youth Ballet

 

Miss Blanchard has a teaching background of over 20 years, founded the Howe Sound Dance Academy 20 years ago and the Squamish Youth Ballet 7 years ago.  She started dancing at the age of 4 years in Vancouver, BC.  She focused on ballet but also studied tap, jazz and hip hop.  In this time she competed, performed and she started assisting and teaching dance classes.

 

At the age of 17 she was admitted to the 3 year Teacher Training Program at the prestigious College of the Royal Academy of Dancing in London, England.  There, in addition to ballet and pedagogy of becoming a ballet teacher she also studied Latin American Dance, Character, Contemporary, Modern, National, Flamenco, Dance History, Labanotation, Human Anatomy, Child Psychology, Music and Choreography to name a few.  During this time, she assisted and taught ballet classes and privates at the Royal Academy of Dance and Parkinson School of Dance and was able to continue performing thru College events.  She was awarded her Teaching Diploma and awarded Licentiateship with the Royal Academy of Dance, and awarded Associates in the Modern Dance Theatre and National Dance branches of the Imperial Society Teachers of Dancing in 1995 and returned to Vancouver to continue teaching.

 

Since returning to Vancouver she completed her RAD Advanced 2 examination earning her an Associateship with the Royal Academy of Dance.  She completed all Vocational examinations with the Imperial Ballet branch of the ISTD and completed her ISTD Modern Advanced 2 examination.  She continued to perform locally and internationally while continuing to teach at various dance schools in Vancouver.  In 1998 Miss Blanchard established the Howe Sound Dance Academy in Brackendale, where she manages the school, teachers and students, continues to teach and design costumes.  She continues to make guest teaching appearances, work on various dance projects, attend teacher’s courses and mentor her students and teachers in training.  Thru out Miss Blanchard’s extensive travels, she has always made a point of investigating international dance scenes and whenever possible be a dance student.

 

Miss Blanchard is always looking to the next season with anticipation and excitement for her students.  To promote dance among youth and to educate about dance and its history, Ms Blanchard started a youth company called Squamish Youth Ballet in 2010. Its performances have been a huge success, selling out Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty performances and community Christmas Spectacular shows.  Under Miss Blanchard’s guidance numerous students have gained acceptance into programs and companies such as Royal Winnipeg Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Boston Ballet, American Ballet Theater, Gelsey Kirkland Academy and Royal Ballet.  She has assisted students in gaining acceptance into local university dance programs including Ryerson University, York University and Simon Fraser University.

 

Just this past season Miss Blanchard has started to adjudicate dance competitions nationwide with plans to continue adjudicating.

 

Miss Blanchard is dedicated to her art and the purity of technique.  Above all she is dedicated to her students and passing on her knowledge of dance.

 

 


ALICIA KINSMAN
Jazz (AIDT), Lyrical, Modern

ALICIA KINSMANEntering her 10th year of teaching for HSDA, Alicia has been dancing since the age of four, training intensely in ballet, jazz, tap, musical theatre, lyrical and hip hop. She is a full associate member of the Association of International Dance Teachers. 

As a dancer, Alicia has competed in many competitions and festivals around the lower mainland. She is the proud recipient of numerous awards and high scoring medals in groups, duos, and as a soloist. Alicia has also attended many conventions around B.C. to strengthen her dance ability even further and expand her knowledge as a dancer, instructor and as a choreographer. 

 

Alicia's true passions have always been dance and working with children.



AMANDA MORRIS
RAD, RTS Ballet, Modern & Acrobatic Arts

 

Amanda is an alumnus of Howe Sound Dance Academy, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dance’s Certificate of Ballet Teaching Studies program and entering her 7th year teaching at Howe Sound Dance Academy.  She is also certified to teach Acrobatics through Acrobatic Arts for Module 1. 

 

While a student at HSDA she completed her Grade 8 Award and Advanced 1 RAD exams as well as being a part of winning competitive groups.  Given the opportunity to assist and teach classes over the past many years has made her realize that her heart has always been in dance!

 

JESSIE MACDONALD Hip Hop, Acrobatic Arts, Jazz & Lyrical

 

Jessie has been performing and training in dance for the past 20 years. Being from Waterloo, Ontario She took gymnastics classes while having the passion for dance at the early age of four. At the age of eight she began training in Jazz which pushed forth the ultimate beginning of her passion and progression for dance and started to involve more genres including Ballet, Lyrical, Contemporary, Breakdancing and Hip Hop.

 

She currently still attends classes at a high level of professionalism that have included master workshops from professional Choreographers including Mark Samuels, Luther Brown, Blake McGrath and Tara­ Jean Popowich. She was drawn to the quick and controlled movements of Hip Hop and Contemporary which seemed to be her specialty but has now evolved her teaching career in many other genres and aspects of instructing. She has been instructing for seven years and is very excited for the journey and progression ahead as a Choreographer, Dance Instructor and performer from the love and passion she has for dance.

 

OFELIA BLANCHARD Admininstration

Miss Ofelia worked 40+ years in the airline industry and has been a staple of HSDA since its beginning 20 years ago.  Liason for teachers, students and their parents, Miss Ofelia nurtures us all and answers all our questions.  She wear many hats as administrator, costume creator & consultant, caterer to examiners & volunteer coordinator.  She continues her active, youthful life style with pilates and tai chi.
