Jazz dance increases the strength, flexibility, coordination and technique of the dancer. Basic jazz technique includes isolations, leaps, turns and dance patterns. Ballet technique is the foundation for all jazz movement. It is strongly recommended that all jazz students take ballet classes as well. At HSDA we teach competitive, non-competitive, non-exam and lyrical jazz, as well as following the syllabi of the Association of International Dance Teachers. Ages are a guideline only. Lyrical has a strong ballet and jazz base however choreographers use emotions and moods to design their own steps.

AIDT Stepping Stones Jazz – ages 6+, or early beginners
(Grade 1 at school, min Pre Primary RAD Ballet)

Classes are 1 hour in length. The beginnings of jazz technique and musicality are taught. It is strongly recommended that students take the appropriate level ballet class to compliment this class.

AIDT Primary Jazz – ages 7-8
(Grade 2-3 at school, min Primary RAD Ballet)

Classes are 1 hour in length. The beginnings of jazz technique and musicality are taught. It is strongly recommended that students take the appropriate level ballet class to compliment this class.

AIDT Gr 1 – ages 8-9
(Grade 3-4 at school, min Gr 1 RAD Ballet)

Classes are 1 hour and 15 mins in length. Students continue to develop their jazz technique and musicality. It is strongly recommended that students take the appropriate level ballet class to compliment this class.

AIDT Gr 2 – ages 9-11
(Grade 4-6at school, min Gr 2 RAD Ballet)

Classes are 1 hour and 15 mins in length. Students continue to develop their jazz technique and musicality. Turns, jumps, progressions and combinations are emphasized. It is strongly recommended that students take the appropriate level ballet class to compliment this class.

AIDT Gr 3 – ages 10-13
(Grade 5-8 at school, approx Gr 3 RAD Ballet)

Classes are 1 hour and 15 mins in length. Established pedagogy is introduced. It is strongly recommended that students take the appropriate level ballet class to compliment this class.

AIDT Gr 4 – ages 10-13
(Grade 5-8 at school, approx Gr 4 RAD Ballet)

Classes are 1 hour and 15 mins in length.  Established pedagogy is introduced.  It is strongly recommended that students take the appropriate level ballet class to compliment this class.

AIDT Final Grade – ages 11+
(Grade 6+ at school, approx Gr 5 Ballet)

Classes are 1 hour and 15 mins long.  This is the first of compulsory exams.  Supplementary ballet classes are required for this level.

AIDT Jazz Preliminary Junior – ages 12+
(Grade 7+ at school, approx Gr 6 Ballet)

Classes are 1 hour in length.   Supplementary ballet classes are required for this level

AIDT Jazz Preliminary – ages 13+
(Grade 8+ at school, approx Gr 7 Ballet)

Classes are 1 hour in length.  Supplementary ballet classes are required for this level

AIDT Jazz Elementary – Advanced – ages
(Grade 8+ at school, approx Gr 7+ Ballet)

Classes are 1 hour and 15 mins in length.  Supplementary ballet classes are required for this level

Performance Jazz 1-4 – ages 7+

Classes are 1 hour hour in length.  These classes are non competitive and non exam classes.   Students will learn the elements of jazz dance.

Performance Lyrical 1-4 – ages 7+

Classes are 1 hour in length. These classes are non competitive and non exam classes. Students will learn the elements of lyrical jazz dance.

Jazz Competitive & Lyrical Competitive
(all levels)

These classes are 45 minutes in duration.  Students must audition for these classes.  Only dance choreography for competition is worked on.  Enrollment in graded RAD exam class with intent to take ballet exam at the appropriate level, technique class at the appropriate level, “tricks & stretch” class at the appropriate level, performance or exam class in any discipline.

Jazz Technique – ages 9+

Classes are 45 minutes – 1.5 hours in length.  This is a supporting class for all dance disciplines, and specifically for students enrolled in competitive & exam classes.  This will help with co-ordination, performance quality, strength, flexibility & stamina.
