Wanting to take their dance experience up and commit to a group

Able to commit to a minimum of 4-5 hours of dance per week no matter what day or time of the week

Able to take and retain correction, consistently apply maximum effort into dance training

Notes for the auditions and team level placement:

  • Have your audition application filled in completely at home and hand in at your audition to Miss B.

  • Be ready to dance on time for your audition. This shows us how committed you are to getting to your classes and ready to dance on time.

  • Dress neatly and appropriately for each audition class. Be prepared to learn and perform short pieces of choreography as well as a skills test.  For hip hop be prepared to free style.

  • Competitive classes can be any day of the week. Please do not audition for a group that you don’t think you can commit to as it makes scheduling very difficult.

  • This is an audition process, which means not everyone gets accepted. Please do not expect or think you are entitled to dance with a particular group of dancers.  You may be put with people younger than you or older than you, provided the abilities, work ethic and maturity match.  You might be disappointed with your placement, but that placement is where we think you will have the most contribute and improvement.  It is about creating a strong competitive TEAM, not being with your friends or with dancers you think you should be dancing with.  Groupings are based on ability and creating the strongest TEAMS, amount of teams to be determined by how many audition.  Regrettably if not enough candidates can be considered for a group, that group will not exist.

  • Acceptance and placement are made by all HSDA teachers, based on your attendance, work ethic, class effort, rate of improvement, amount of hours per week you dance, injury susceptibility, general attitude and ability to take and apply corrections over the past year. Ability, level, compatibility, maturity and age are also been taken into consideration.  All RAD & AIDT exam results are considered.

  • If we feel that you require further training and development in order to be accepted on our competitive teams, we encourage continuing taking dance classes and re audition next year. Train hard in every class so that you are technically ready.   Focus on every exercise as if each combination were the entire class.  Preparing for auditions should be an ongoing activity; not only when you are expecting an audition.

  • Understudies may be considered for certain groups.

  • We aim to have results of your audition emailed out after the May long weekend.

COMPETITION GROUP INFORMATION

Competitive classes are for students wanting to take their dance experience a step further.  It also requires the enrolment in core classes (graded ballet exam classes, jazz exam classes, choreography classes & technique classes).  Competitions provide students with an opportunity to perform in an organized competitive environment against students from other schools in the region.  We participate in 3 competitions a year (typically February – May), entry fees are approx $47 per dance per entry, payment of which is the responsibility of the students.  Competition fees are non refundable.  Competitions can be any day of the week from 9am-9pm.

Please note that the competitive classes require a strong commitment.  Competing in a dance group is a TEAM effort; students will be relying on one another to make their best effort.  Please ensure that you are willing and able to dedicate yourself to your groups and the competitions.  This means prioritizing attendance in core classes, choreography classes, and rehearsal and performance schedules over other commitments.  Failure to do so may result in dismissal from the group.

Students missing more than 2 choreography classes in a row and/or general poor attendance in core classes or display a lack of progress or poor attitude and disrespectfulness to their respective teacher and other students may have their placement within the group re assessed, put on probation or may be expelled from the group

Regrettably if a student has an extended family vacation, or vacations too close to competition dates (Feb-May) she/he may be asked not to perform or leave the group.

If a student is ill or has a medical condition preventing them to dance at a competitive level she/he may be asked not to participate.

Competitive classes are subject to the same hourly fee schedule and costume fee and non-competitive classes (with the understanding that competitive class costumes CAN run higher than $75 CND and there could be a balance owing).  Understudies will be responsible for their own costume.

ALL COMPETITIVE STUDENTS WILL REQUIRE EXTRA PRACTISES.  It is difficult to forecast if and how many privates extra classes will be required as groups’ progress at different rates, 2-5 classes is realistic.  This considered private tutoring.  The instructor providing the service enters a private service with you and can set their rate with you that they feel comfortable with.  Any monies go directly to the instructor.   It is the discretion of the individual teacher to determine their rate (you can expect to pay $5-25 depending on how participants, length of lesson and relevant to instructor involved).  The idea is that the cost can be shared across all group members.

Participation in a competitive class also requires enrolment in core classes.  This is mandatory.  If you withdraw from a core class, your enrolment in the competitive class will be re-evaluated.  Below is minimum requirements:
